    Filtration systems for swimming ponds

The swimming pond has been gaining popularity for quite some time now. this natural alternative for regular swimming pools looks great in your garden all year round and is very pleasant to swim in. some may call this a "organic swimming pond". that is because it doesn't use any chemicals such as chlorine.

The difference between a swimming pool and a swimming pond is the way the water gets filtered.

Filtration in a swimming pool use systems that rely on things such as chlorine, salt electrolysis or hydrogen peroxide. in a swimming pond the filtration happens in a organic way either by a plant filter or a mechanical filter. most swimming ponds and organic swimming pools get filtered by a marsh area or plant filter. this filter area is either connected to the swimming pond. with most swimming ponds this area is rather large and need regular maintanance.

The benefits of a swimming pond compared to a swimming pool are:

    • Even when it is too cold to swim, a swimming pond still looks good in your garden.
    • Through the use of organic bacteria and plants the water of swimming ponds is way healthier then the water of regular swimming ponds
    • Swimming ponds are more efficient then swimming pools
    • Swimming ponds are the ideal combination of nature and recreation
    • Maintenance costs are usually way lower then with swimming pools

    Drum filters for swimming ponds

Through the use of a MPF drum filter or MPF biodrum you could reduce the plant area of your swimming pond by 80% or even remove it all together. you will still be filtering organically with less maintenance and more room in your garden to use for other things. incase you do decide to remove the plant area all together we advise to install a UV lamp and/or include a phosphate remover. the UV lamps will keep the water clear by stopping the multiplication of one celled algea.

How does a drum filter work?

A drum filter is a pre-filter that easily removes very fine particles (<70mu) from the water. the water flows gravity or pump fed in the filter. the filth then gets removed from the water.

The water flows via the inside of the drum filter through the wall of the filter to the outside of it. on that wall is installed screen of 70 mu. this screen is where all the filth stays.

after a while this screen will become too dirty to properly do its job. this is why there is a automatic controll built into the filter. this controll constantly monitors the water level inside the filter. in gravity setup this is behind the drum and in a pump fed setup this is in front of the drum. when the screen gets too dirty the water level will change inside of the filter. in a gravity setup the water level will drop and in a pump fed system the water level will rise.

Incase the control notices a change in water level it will start up a rinse. during this rinse the motor will turn the drum and a oase flushing pump (3 bar) will flush the screen clean through the nozzles. the nozzles spray water from the outisde of the drum to the inside of it to remove the debree. this dirty water is catched by a gutter which will send it away as sewage water. When the water level is back to normal again the filter will keep flushing for 14 seconds to make sure that everything is clean. after this the flushing pump and motor turn off and the electronics resume monitoring the water level.
